What Are the Different Types of Anime? Shōnen, Shōjo, Seinen, and More

Some of the terms newcomers to the world of anime encounter most frequently are shōnen, shōjo, seinen, and josei. However, these terms do not actually refer directly to anime “genres,” but rather to the target audiences that the works are primarily aimed at. In addition, there are many different anime genres, such as isekai, mecha, and slice of life, that describe the content and themes of a story.

So, what are the most common anime categories and genres?

What Is Shōnen?

Shōnen refers to works primarily aimed at young male audiences. This category often emphasizes themes such as action, adventure, competition, friendship, and personal growth.

The main character often strives to achieve a goal, makes new friends, and grows stronger by overcoming the challenges encountered along the way.

Common themes: Action, friendship, struggle, adventure, and perseverance.

What Is Shōjo?

Shōjo is a category primarily used to describe works aimed at young female audiences. Romantic relationships, friendships, emotional development, and bonds between characters are frequently explored.

However, not every shōjo work has to be romantic. There are also shōjo titles featuring fantasy, adventure, and mystery elements.

Common themes: Romance, friendship, emotional growth, and relationships.

What Is Seinen?

Seinen generally refers to works aimed at adult male audiences. Compared with shōnen works, they may feature more complex stories, psychological conflicts, and themes intended for mature audiences.

Subjects such as politics, war, social issues, crime, and human psychology can be explored in greater depth in seinen works.

Common themes: Psychology, drama, social issues, suspense, and complex narratives.

What Is Josei?

Josei is a category used to describe works aimed at adult female audiences. Relationships are generally portrayed from a more realistic perspective than in shōjo works.

Professional life, adulthood, family relationships, careers, and romantic relationships are among the subjects frequently explored in josei works.

Common themes: Adult relationships, everyday life, careers, and romance.

What Is Isekai?

Isekai, which has become highly popular in recent years, is an anime genre in which a character travels from their own world to a different or fantastical world.

The character may be reincarnated in another world, enter a game, or mysteriously find themselves transported to another universe.

What Is Mecha?

In the mecha genre, giant robots and technological war machines play an important role in the story. These works are not necessarily limited to battles between robots; they may also explore deeper subjects such as war, politics, humanity, and the relationship between humans and technology.

What Is Slice of Life?

Slice of life anime focuses on the everyday lives of its characters.

School life, friendships, family relationships, and ordinary daily events may form the heart of the story. Rather than large scale battles or fantastical adventures, the focus is usually on smaller, more intimate moments.

Sports Anime

Sports anime can focus on volleyball, basketball, football, tennis, swimming, and many other sports.

These works are not only about matches and competitions. Team spirit, rivalry, friendship, and the characters’ journeys of personal growth also play an important role.

The Boundaries in the Anime World Are Not Absolute

An anime does not have to belong to just one category or genre. For example, a work may target a shōnen audience while also containing action, fantasy, comedy, and romance.

One of the most distinctive features of anime is therefore the ease with which different genres and themes can be combined.

While terms such as shōnen, shōjo, seinen, and josei indicate the audience a work is primarily aimed at, expressions such as isekai, mecha, slice of life, sports, romance, and fantasy describe its genre and themes.

Thanks to this diversity, the world of anime offers something for almost every viewer, from action and romance to everyday life and science fiction.
